Greg Ross captured the night with Best of Show,
Best White Wine, and 4 Golds for his 4 entries
Our 2018 homemade wines competition was a great success with a huge improvement in wines over the previous year. This year there were many more wines from Nevada Grapes, and very surprisingly the Gold Awards went exclusively to Nevada grown grapes. We had fewer entries at this year’s competition, but the returning judges thought that the quality of wine was much better. Hopefully we can take a small amount of credit for helping the local winemaking community improve their craft with our educational outreach.
Twenty-one wines received ribbons; two double gold, four gold, nine silver, five bronze, and also an honorable mention. Of the gold awards, four were Nevada whites; a Grüner Veltliner, a Riesling and two blends. Of the Nevada reds one went to a Frontenac and the other to a blend. All wine makers won at least one ribbon, and one winemaker took gold for each of his entries.
Greg Ross was the super star of the event, as he entered 4 wines and took 4 gold awards, including the Best of Show for his red blend and Best of Division for his white blend. The other Double Gold was awarded to Joe Bernardo for his 2017 semi-sweet Riesling, and Jason Schultz received a Gold for his Frontenac.
We hope to have more winemakers enter next year and look forward to even better wines. See all the 2018 Awards here.

Basin and Range Wines, Reno’s newest, has bottled their 1st wines
Reno’s newest urban winery, Basin and Range Wines, bottled its first wine on Saturday (Feb 17, 2018) after several years of hard work and at least that many years of struggling with the legislative system. Owners Wade Jonston and Joe Bernardo contracted a mobile bottling plant to come to Reno and perform the job in just a day. The Brianna, a white wine grape, was grown in Nevada and the wine will be available soon to taste and buy at their 415E 4th location. Two red varietals Frontenac and St. Croix will be bottled in the near future. See the fuller story and more photos on Grape Basin News.
Chocolate & Wine Pairing

Help us with your tax deductible membership to Nevada Vines & Wines
Nevada Vines & Wines is a volunteer (none paid) organization and our board of directors and other volunteers work very hard to make a difference, but funding is limited. Your help has been instrumental in growing the wine making industry in Nevada in recent years and is still needed. Three years ago we help open up Nevada laws to allow wine production in Clark and Washoe and Counties. In 2016 we helped Washoe County implemented those changes in county ordinances, resulting in several wineries beginning the startup process. In 2017 three new wineries were established in Reno, with one opening for business in the summer and the other two opening for sales in April 2018. In the upcoming year we hope to encourage others to take the leap, resulting in more jobs and a stronger and more diverse Nevada economy. Help us make this happen by join us with a tax deductible membership. In addition to helping us fund our efforts, a membership allows you to:
- Enter your wines into our annual wine competition
- Participation in member’s only events
- Receive discount on our monthly wine tastings
- Participate in numerous events including our Backyard Vineyard Tour, Vineyard and Winemaking 101 classes, vineyard and winery trips and more.
- Participate in our year end holiday celebration
The website is ready to take your dues. A single membership is still only $25 and a family membership is $40. Pay with PayPal or Credit Card on our site, or print this form and mail it with your check.
Nevada Wine Academy
Joseph Bernardo and Bill Coplin will continue their ” Wine Academy” for a second year and NV&W is proud to continue to sponsor them. This supports our mission statement, to promote and expand the presence of vineyards and wine making in our community. The wine academy will be continuing the Adopt-a-Vine Program at Bill and Joe’s vineyards, and their school will be teaching from the basics of growing grapes to making the wine. Participants will manage a small portion of a vineyard and reap most of the benefits (wine). Instruction will be both in the classroom and in the vineyard, “from ground to vine, and from vine to bottle”. They welcome any and all who are interested in growing their own grapes or just making wine. All participants must be members of NV&W, or join when they begin classes.
